What Makes an Italian Invoice Template Different

Italian invoices (fatture) are regulated by the DPR 633/1972 (IVA law) and the DPR 472/1996 (electronic invoicing decree). Key required fields:

  • Numero progressivo — sequential invoice number
  • Data di emissione — date of issue
  • Partita IVA del cedente/prestatore — issuer's VAT number (for VAT-registered businesses)
  • Codice Fiscale — tax code (required for individual/sole trader issuers)
  • Imponibile — taxable base (pre-IVA amount)
  • Aliquota IVA — IVA rate
  • Importo IVA — IVA amount
  • Totale fattura — gross total

Electronic invoicing (fatturazione elettronica) via the SDI system is mandatory for B2B and B2G invoices in Italy since 2019.

Create Invoices in Italian Language

Switch invoicePrivate to Italiano to generate fully Italian-language invoices:

  • Labels in Italian: Fattura, Data, Descrizione, Quantità, Prezzo unitario, IVA, Totale
  • Date format: DD/MM/YYYY
  • Number format: 1.234,56 € (period as thousands separator, comma as decimal)
  • Correct Italian formatting for currency and amounts

invoicePrivate generates a professional-quality PDF fattura suitable for Italian clients and Italian-speaking recipients in Switzerland (Ticino) and other Italian-speaking regions.

Italian IVA Rates

Italy applies four IVA (Imposta sul Valore Aggiunto) rates:

  • 22% (aliquota ordinaria) — standard rate for most services and goods: professional services, consulting, software, advertising, electronics
  • 10% (aliquota ridotta) — food (some categories), hospitality, passenger transport, pharmaceutical products (some)
  • 5% — certain social services, some food products
  • 4% (aliquota super-ridotta) — essential foods, books, newspapers, medicines

Select the appropriate rate in invoicePrivate. The IVA amount and total are calculated automatically.

Regime Forfettario: Invoicing Without IVA

If you operate under the regime forfettario (flat-rate tax scheme) in Italy, you do not charge IVA on your invoices. This regime applies to individuals with revenues below €85,000/year. Requirements for your fattura:

  • No IVA charged or shown
  • Include this mandatory statement: "Operazione effettuata ai sensi dell'art. 1, commi da 54 a 89, Legge n. 190/2014 – Regime Forfettario. Non soggetta ad IVA."
  • Apply marca da bollo (€2 stamp duty) on invoices exceeding €77.47 if the client cannot deduct IVA (applies to private clients, not VAT-registered businesses)

Add the required statement to the notes field in invoicePrivate when issuing invoices under regime forfettario.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is electronic invoicing (fattura elettronica) required in Italy?

Yes, for B2B and B2G (business-to-government) transactions in Italy, electronic invoicing via the SDI (Sistema di Interscambio) system has been mandatory since January 2019. invoicePrivate generates a PDF fattura suitable for exporting and submitting through SDI-compatible platforms, though it does not integrate directly with the SDI system.

What is a Codice Fiscale and is it needed on invoices?

The Codice Fiscale is a 16-character alphanumeric tax code assigned to every Italian resident. For sole traders and freelancers, it must appear alongside (or instead of) the Partita IVA on invoices. Add it to your business details in invoicePrivate Settings.

What is the difference between this page and the Italy invoice template page?

This page focuses on generating invoices in the Italian language and format. The Italy invoice template page covers the full legal requirements for B2B invoicing under Italian tax law (DPR 633/1972), including SDI requirements and specific IVA rules.

Can I use invoicePrivate for Swiss Italian clients?

Yes. Italian is one of Switzerland's official languages (spoken in Ticino and parts of Graubünden). Swiss IVA (MWST) applies at 8.1% standard rate. Use invoicePrivate's Italian language mode and set the Swiss rate manually.
