What Makes a French Invoice Template Different
French invoices (factures) must comply with the Code général des impôts and TVA (taxe sur la valeur ajoutée) rules. Key required elements:
- Numéro de facture — sequential invoice number, no gaps
- Date de la facture — invoice date
- SIRET number — your 14-digit business registration number
- Numéro de TVA intracommunautaire — EU VAT number for B2B transactions
- Montant HT (hors taxes) — pre-tax amount
- Taux de TVA — TVA rate applied
- Montant de la TVA — tax amount
- Montant TTC (toutes taxes comprises) — total including tax
For auto-entrepreneurs (micro-entrepreneurs), the required note: "TVA non applicable, art. 293 B du CGI"
Create Invoices in French Language
invoicePrivate generates fully French-language invoices when you switch the interface to Français:
- All labels and headings render in French (Facture, Date, Désignation, Prix unitaire HT, TVA, Total TTC)
- Date format: DD/MM/YYYY (French standard)
- Number format: 1 234,56 € (space as thousands separator, comma as decimal)
- Currency placed after the amount following French convention
This produces a document indistinguishable from a natively generated French invoice — ideal for invoicing French clients or operating in France.
French TVA Rates Explained
France applies several TVA (VAT) rates:
- 20% (taux normal) — standard rate for most services and goods: consulting, software, professional services, advertising
- 10% (taux intermédiaire) — restaurant meals, transport, renovation work on residential buildings
- 5.5% (taux réduit) — food, books, newspapers, cultural events, energy for residential use
- 2.1% (taux particulier) — medicines reimbursed by social security, live performances (first 140 performances)
Select the applicable rate in invoicePrivate. The TVA amount and TTC total are calculated automatically.
Auto-Entrepreneur Invoice Rules
If you are an auto-entrepreneur (micro-entrepreneur) in France and below the franchise en base de TVA threshold (€36,800 for services in 2025), you do not charge TVA on your invoices. Instead, you must include this statement:
"TVA non applicable en vertu de l'article 293 B du CGI"
Add this as a note in your invoicePrivate invoice. Your clients cannot reclaim TVA from your invoices, and you do not remit any TVA to the tax authority.
When you exceed the threshold, you must register for TVA and start charging it from the following invoice.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is an English invoice valid for a French client?
Yes, invoices in France can be in any language. However, French tax authorities may require a translation during an audit. For French domestic clients, a French-language invoice avoids ambiguity and looks more professional. Switch invoicePrivate to French mode for a fully localised invoice.
What is my SIRET number and where does it go on the invoice?
Your SIRET is a 14-digit identifier assigned when you register your business in France (9-digit SIREN + 5-digit NIC). Add it to the sender information block in invoicePrivate Settings. It must appear on all invoices issued by businesses registered in France.
What is the difference between this page and the France invoice template page?
This page covers creating invoices in the French language or French format. The France invoice template page covers the full legal requirements for invoicing under French tax law (CGI), including SIRET, TVA, and auto-entrepreneur rules.
Can I create invoices for clients in French-speaking countries outside France?
Yes. French is used in Belgium, Switzerland, Canada (Quebec), and many African countries. invoicePrivate's French mode works for all French-speaking regions. Note that TVA rates differ: Belgium 21%, Switzerland 8.1% TVA. Set the correct rate manually.
